Under federal law, credit bureaus have thirty (30) days to investigate the matter. Depending on the situation of the debt, there can be contacted to ask for further information.

If additional information is provided by the individual, the credit bureau has an additional fifteen (15) days to provide a final answer on the matter.

Hopefully, when the credit bureau responds to the letter it will result in those items being removed from the report. If so, nothing more needs to be done and the outstanding balance should have been eliminated and there is likely to be an immediate improvement in the entire individual's FICO score.
